chance 原意是“机会、可能性”，来自古法语 cheance（“发生、偶然”之意），再追溯到拉丁语 cadere（“落下、发生”）。短语 not a chance 可理解为省略了 **(There is) not a chance (that …)**，即“（发生……）的可能性不存在”，后来在20世纪的口语中固定为更简短有力的否定表达。
